6 ANTIQUE (1820-1850) PLANK BOTTOM CHAIRS
SKU: FN30X178
SET OF 6 GREEN PAINTED PLANK BOTTOM CHAIRS, circa1820-1850
About 1820 a hybrid chair began to be produced in America that merged elements of Windsor and Sheraton styles. Sometimes called “Country Windsor” or “Kitchen Windsor” today they are mostly referred to as plank bottom. These sturdy spindle-and-crest style chairs were quite popular until the Victorian era. The seat, usually made of pine or fir, was of a single plank about two inches thick with minor saddling, slightly wider in front than in the rear. Legs and spindles were made of harder woods and box stretchers held the legs at a slight splay.
